Tour of Portobelo
Portobelo is a quaint Caribbean town officially founded in 1597. Among the highlights is a stop at the Church of San Felipe, one of the oldest building in the city and the sanctuary of the "Black Christ" This 300- year old statue of Jesus bearing the cross was bound for Columbia aboard a spanish galleon when the ship sank. The statue was washed ashore and carried to Portobelo, where it remains a cherished icon and the focus of an annual festival. Portobelo is a colorful town with many photo ops. I am fascinated with interesting doors and windows and found many here. This is also the place our group boarded the boat for our curise through the Panama Canal.
