Tour of Portobelo : Portobelo is a quaint Caribbean town officially founded in 1597. Among the highlights is a stop at the Church of San Felipe, one of the oldest building in the city and the sanctuary of the "Black Christ" This 300- year old statue of Jesus bearing the cross was bound for Columbia aboard a spanish galleon when the ship sank. The statue was washed ashore and carried to Portobelo, where it remains a cherished icon and the focus of an annual festival. Portobelo is a colorful town with many photo ops. I am fascinated with interesting doors and windows and found many here. This is also the place our group boarded the boat for our curise through the Panama Canal.

Crossing the Isthmus of Panama Via The Panama Canal : The Panama canal is a lock-type canal, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) long, that unites the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at one of the narrowest points of both the Isthmus of Panama and the American Continent. The Canal officially opened its doors to international trade on August 15, 1914, and since then, more than 942,000 vessels have transited the waterway. The Canal's three sets of locks, each of which has two lanes, operate as water lifts to elevate ships 26 meters above sea level to the level of Gatun Lake, in their transit of the channel across the continental Divide, and then lower them back to sea level on the opposite side of the Isthmus. The 12.6 km Gaillard Cut is the narrowest stretch in the Panama Canal and represents 15 percent of the waterway's total length. The Cut, extending from Pedro Miguel Locks to Gamboa, crosses the Continental Divide. We crossed from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. It was a great experience!!

Visiting Panama La Vieja Inside Panama City : Panama La Vieja is one of the last remnants of the original Panama City. This area of the City contains the Presidential Palace and many beautiful historical buildings. It is currently experiencing a significant amount of renovation and revitalization. I found many interesting doors and windows, both old and new. We also saw the Iglesia San Jose which contains "El Altar de Oro".
